I used to be a struggling physical therapist working at a large corporate clinic in New Jersey. I worked for “them”. I was struggling because I was stuck with a salary that had very little room for growth. I wanted to start my own practice and build my own business but refused to spend tens of thousands of dollars on overpriced consultants (many of whom had never spent a single day as a clinician).
I felt I had the entrepreneurial drive and took a leap of faith. With a lot of enthusiasm and help from the banking system, I had my own private practice and fitness training center. I did everything I could to make ends meet; home care, outpatients in my own clinic, knocking on the doors of doctors. The dream started to fade faster than it began. I started getting burned out quickly.
Before long, I had resigned myself to the fact that my practice would control me, rather than the other way around.
I was not getting paid as much as I wanted. Waiting weeks to get reimbursed, defending the need to charge copays and competing with vested interests from referral sources was NOT the reason I went to PT school. I was an employee in my own business. I realized I wanted more. I wanted the freedom that came with owning a business, NOT a glorified job where I could call myself a business owner.
I felt trapped.
The only way out at that time was to work harder (not smarter). Despite endless hours in the clinic, my income went through many ups and downs. There was no predictability. I couldn’t measure my business, what brought in patients, which methods worked and which didn’t or what was generating a positive return on investment. I had bought myself a job that I could not get out of. I had all the structure and organization you could imagine, but yet, there was something missing.
